2021 Aug – Agitating towards career change, a call to action for anyone feeling a bit stuck
It’s been over a year now that I left my 10 year Google career, delving into the chaos of the worst job market in over 100 years. I feel fortunate for my time as a senior leader developing the UK market, a large sales team, and myself throughout the highest paced role of my life. Many questioned the timeliness of my decision, and I will forever be grateful for those who reached out, expressing compassion and admiration for my resilience in “sticking to one’s values and demanding something better from your employer, where stagnant thinking began to demand conformity”.
In my transition to a new career, I became more appreciative of some of the rare and priceless moments at Google, the things many of us crave in our vocation and life’s purpose: 1.) the opportunity to mentor new careers and set a tone of “intrinsic reward”, with an impressionable new generation. 2.) the inspiration I took from select mentors, who supported a quality and passion for excellence in your work (over a ‘results at all costs’ mindset). And 3.) the moral imperative for leaders to encourage the sharing of deep, diverse values – with our teams and our customers.
Values like authenticity, creativity and wellbeing can quickly be forgotten in large companies that emphasize politics over building, progression over purpose. This is why I am thrilled to have found a new home at (drumroll…) the exciting rocketship of Vidmob, a company that truly believes that creativity and creative people can change the world. I will be starting my new role in September, as the Managing Director for European Growth, as we scale up our model for creative and brand intelligence, with Dublin as our EU hub. After a lot of ‘self-seeking’, I am thrilled to be staying in Ireland, which has opened my eyes to the world. And I am thrilled to find a company of honest, creative people, who have opened their arms to me so genuinely, as we build a better business together!!
Please stay tuned for more updates on our mission for the future. For now, thank you to every person who supported me in the most challenging parts of this year – my friends, my mother, soul of my father, sisters, cousins, peers & future colleagues – It’s been my privilege to inspire and share any wisdom along this path of self-discovery. – PC
